One of the signature items in every Eddie Merlot’s lounge is our pineapple-infused vodka. You will see it at every location on the back bar, with natural, fresh pineapple and vodka blending together in a large, clear-glass canister. It’s a staple for us because it gives our customers something they can’t get anywhere else. Sure, there are flavored vodkas on the market, and they’re pretty good, but nothing compares to the real, true flavor of fresh fruit.
Finlandia is owned by Louisville-based Brown-Forman Corp. We spoke with Chris Doyle, who manages the Finlandia brand. Brown-Forman has owned Finlandia for eight years, Chris said. The brand was originally started as a project of the government in Finland, and was first imported to the U.S. 40 years ago.
Chris told us that Finlandia is debuting a new bottle this month. Since Finlandia is made in Finland from pure glacial water, Finlandia wanted to emphasize that heritage by creating a bottle that had an ice motif. “The designers were really trying to capture the exact moment that ice begins to melt,” Chris says. “Finland is known for contemporary glass design. We wanted to continue to enhance the premium look of Finlandia.”
Chris says that a common misconception about vodka is that it’s all the same, because it’s colorless and almost odorless. But that’s not the case. “There are three different kinds of vodkas,” Chris says. “One has more of a wheaty taste. Another is more of a traditional Russian vodka, more medicinal tasting. Finlandia has a clear, crisp taste that comes from the glacial water and six-row barley. It’s low in oils and has a pure taste.”
One of our new drinks that features the pineapple-infused vodka is our Mixed Message Martini, which is the pineapple-infused vodka with fresh blue berries muddled with pineapple, and basil.
